About the Church

The church of Panagia Phorbiotissa, also known as Panagia of Asinou, is located in the Troodos mountain range’s northern foothills. It is constructed on the east side of a stream, three kilometres south of Nikitari. It was included to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1985, together with nine other painted Byzantine churches of the Troodos mountain range. As its name suggests, Panagia Forbiotissa was formerly the katholicon (monastery church) of the Monastery of Forbion.

About the Church

The church of Panagia tou Arakos is situated in a central area of the Troodos mountains, in the area of Pitsilia, between the villages of Lagoudera and Saranti. In 1985 it was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List, which includes nine other painted Byzantine churches of the Troodos range. Panagia tou Arakos used to be the katholicon (monastery church) of a monastery bearing the same name which seems to have been built during the second half of the 12th century, when monastic life was flourishing in Cyprus. When Vassili Barsky, a Russian monk, visited the island in 1735, the monastery was almost abandoned and was only inhabited by three monks.

About the Monastery

Trooditissa Monastery, located on the southern slopes of the Troodos Mountains, is one of the few monasteries in Cyprus for which the date of foundation is unclear. On the basis of local legend, it is thought that it was founded immediately after the iconoclastic period (8th-9th century A.D.). In general, monasteries in Cyprus were constructed after a hermit or hermits lived there, typically in caves, living a life of spiritual struggle. The monasteries were then constructed around these saints. The same holds true for the Troditissa Monastery. A deed from the 14th century has the earliest mention of the monastery. There are no relics from the Byzantine Middle Ages or the Frankish period.
